Natural Characteristics of Solid Wood

Wood is a living natural material, and every product made from it is unique. Natural variations occur in the colour, grain, knots and other details of the wood.

The natural characteristics of wood are particularly visible in tabletops made from wide solid wood planks. These include:

  • Natural movement of the wood, particularly across its width. Over time, the planks may shrink, expand or warp slightly.
  • Cracks and the formation of cracks over time. The extent of cracking can be affected by factors such as indoor humidity, temperature and internal stresses within the wood.
  • Dry indoor air, for example as a result of mechanical ventilation, may increase drying, shrinkage and cracking of the wood.
  • Strong and unique natural grain patterns.
  • Gaps of approximately 1–4 mm between the planks.
  • The planks are approximately 40 mm thick and, depending on the size of the table, approximately 150–195 mm wide.

These characteristics are a natural part of products made from solid wood and do not, in themselves, indicate that the product is defective.

Tabletops Made from Glued Laminated Wood

Glued laminated wood generally moves less than full-width solid wood planks and is also less prone to cracking. Its appearance is more subtle and uniform than that of full-width planks.

Depending on the product, glued laminated wood tabletops are approximately 28 or 38 mm thick. There are no gaps between the planks. Grooves can be added to the surface at intervals of approximately 200–400 mm, giving the tabletop the appearance of being made from very wide planks.

Rustic Finish

The rustic appearance of our products is an intentional part of their design. For this reason, not all natural characteristics of the wood or marks resulting from the manufacturing process are removed.

Depending on the model and material, the product may feature, for example:

  • saw or planing marks
  • dents and other machining marks
  • cracks
  • knots and knot marks
  • nail holes
  • natural variations in the colour and grain of the wood
  • other details naturally associated with rustic wooden products.

For example, in the Kajo, Rustiikki and Pirtti collections of coffee and dining tables, these characteristics are part of the products’ intentionally rustic appearance.

The surface of faux-plank tabletops is generally smoother, although they may also feature details such as small scratches or saw marks intentionally left along the edges.

Products manufactured in larger batches may occasionally also have minor finishing marks, such as slight paint runs or scratches. Small surface marks may be more noticeable on darker colours than on lighter shades.

If you would prefer a more uniform product without prominent cracks, knots or other rustic details, please contact us before placing your order. We can discuss the possibility of creating a product that better matches your individual preferences.

Colours and Surface Treatment

We primarily use Osmo Color wood wax finishes on our products. Our most commonly used shades are Kelo, Lumi, Antique Oak and Ebony.

For the translucent black finish, we use a combination of two different wood stains and wax.

Please note that wood is a natural material, so the final colour may vary depending on the characteristics and grain of the wood and the specific batch of material. Screen settings may also affect how colours appear in our online store.
